Bottles, Bottles, and more Bottles...

This all started a few weeks back... but let me just start off saying that 2-3 weeks ago... if Bottle knowledge were glass... then I did not have enough to power a mini moped around the circumference of a cheereo...

My wife's father passed away 31 years ago and dug these bottles for the 25 years prior to that... they have been sitting in the house since then... some in the baskets he brought them home in... These 66 were ones he had in the living room in a book case...

Fast forward to today... my mother-in-law has decided that she would like to sell them... So I said sure I can help, clean, catalog, take picture, do some research... Yeah I knew what a pontil was... NOT! Blob Top... sure.... LoL... I was clueless... but started to read and post...

But I took some pictures and posted them on TNet, Antique-Bottle, and FindMall... Here was my original pictures... and let me just say... this is 66 bottles... there are 1500-2000 in the collection...

Picture #3 the Jackson, the Colbalt Pison with Skulls, and the Olive Rumsford all drew attention...

But the Jackson had my PM's, full... 50+ Emails.. and I shared my cell with a few people... 54 phone calls in 48 hours....

I looked on the internet and could find 1 other picture of this bottle and little to no information... but everyone seemed to know about it...

Then I learned that the last one that was sold at auction was in 1991 for 3600$... Day one offers: I'll drive there today with 3500$, day 2 offers... 4500$, day 3 offers.... 5500$... so I emailed a glass auction house and the owner called me in under an hour... and gave me somemore background... This auction house is in New England so we made an appointment and meet with him... we also brought the threadless insulators and a few other bottles... 3 of them went over the Jackson for 20 minutes... Not a mark, scratch, line, ding.... nothing.... Its as flawless as then day it was created... 1835ish... and he estimated that it will go in the close to and perhaps just over 10k mark.... WoW! and its been sitting in the bookcase that we have all walked by a gaxzillion times... and you know what.... There are 1500+ bottles that we haven't touched! I'll post the links when as the auction nears... We are inthe process of going through the rest... He will auction them all off... some in an absentee aution the rest in live auction in groups... bundling the 1$ bottle with stuff that is desirable to move it all...

Those are some awesome bottles Paul, I must say that her brother sure did find some good ones there and I'm sure many of those are highly sought after bottles for sure.

The though of 10K or more for that Jackson has the family awe struck... He just emailed me ... about the threadless insulator... It is discolored and needs professional cleaning for 15$ and in fine condition its worth 700$, but it has a big chip on one side... He said it will net 200-400$ after cleaning...

Additionally he lives in a huge 1750's house... Lots and lots of land that he gave me permission to detect... he said there is also an additional piece if property that has the remains of a few early 1700's foundations on it.... I can detect there as well...

COME ON WEATHER! If we get more snow I'm driving to PA, finding Phil the rodent, and having me some ground hog STEW! :beatdeadhorse:

Awsome is all I can say Paul :clapping: :clapping: Good luck on them bottles, I was drooling from the first time I saw some of the older ones. lol And good luck at the house and cellar holes. Seems like the family is gonna appreciate what those bottles will bring at auction. Good for them :happydance01:

Paul did your father-in-law dig these himself? I e-mailed this link to a guy in our club who is into privy digging in a big way. Man those are fantastic.

All I can say is WOW!!!!! I love that blue poison bottle,,,,so many beauties there,,,,,,,Best of luck on the old detecting spots!!!!!!
Keep us posted on what these bottles bring :shocked04: :shocked04: :shocked04: :shocked04:

All I can say is wow! :omg: :omg: What makes that bottle so valuable?

Bottles will out value the coins we find at a site by a long shot lol That is if they are at least 1880 or earlier. I bet there are even some newer bottles that are worth a bit. But when you get into the pontiled ones, things can add up quickly. It's just like coins really, rarety and demand drive the prices up.

All I can say is HOLY WOW!!!! Those are some crazy bottles! Good luck in the auction, can't wait to hear about the results. This thread reminds me of Antiques Roadshow! Are you sure one of those bottles didn't belong to Thomas Jefferson:huh: Good job helpin' the family sort 'em all out, and best of luck detecting those new spots!

:shocked04: Weeeell........... I guess I won't be PMing you with a desire to buy the poison bottle then! lol
That is the coolest little bottle I've ever seen !!
I'll be watching for the auction thumbsup01

:shocked04: :shocked04: :shocked04:
