New member just saying Hello from Central Texas. I'm a retired paramedic who has been metal detecting for about 40 years. Those 24 hour EMS shifts were long but left time for other things in between. Now I have time to really take advantage of our no-winter climate. I try to get out for a little while every day and hunt.

Hello and welcome to the forum John , i'm envious of your all year detecting capabilities :envious: and well also of some of the history of the Lone Star State and jeeze even your retirement too ;) :grin: glad you join and I will be looking toward seeing what you fine in the big state.

Hi John. I just retired 6 months ago after 32 years in law enforcement and worked 12 years part time as an EMT for the local ambulance. Now I'm in the 911 center telling the cops and EMT's where to go. ;) I hope you retire better than I did! I've got lots of Army ::usaflag:: buddies spread throughout Texas. Anyway, glad to have you on the site. Post pics of some of your finds when you have time.

I used to love winter :frozen: I planned on retiring in Vermont. Until I took up detecting. Now I HATE snow >:# You must have some great finds over the years.....any favs? Welcome to the group, from the nutmeg state.

I have a lot of good memories. In the 1970's I detected on the grounds of the state capitol in Austin. Nobody minded. State employees would spend their lunch hour laying under the trees and I'd come along later and collect the change that spilled from their pockets. A fair percentage of it would be silver. I wouldn't dare take a detector on those grounds today. They'd probably call out SWAT! LOL!

Some years later I was able to search Convict Hill where the limestone used to build part of our state capitol was quarried. I found several old steel wedges used to split the stone and a badly rusted sledge hammer head. Those items were donated to the State Museum. They are probably rusting away in a box somewhere.

Northwest of Austin there was a Confederate marshaling ground during the Civil War. We found some Minie balls and other items there. Nothing really exciting though.

My most recent adventure was when I found a high school class ring dated 1978 from a school in Maryland. I found it about 7 down in the grounds of a church. (Yes, I had permission.) The owners initials were engraved inside. I contacted the school and was sent a list of graduating seniors from that class. I matched initials to a name and then looked for someone by that name. Turns out he is living just north of Austin in Round Rock. He lost the ring in 1980 while on a hay ride at the church with his future wife. Thirty-three years later I handed it back to him. I like doing things like that. It's great PR for the hobby.

But old? Well, I guess I may be getting there. I'll start collecting social security in September.

Welcome from western MA. Congrats on you entrance into the 40 year club lol I too like the feeling of returning personal items. I had recently found a diamond ring in about 5 of snow for a very upset woman. When she got home from work and the ring was waiting for her, she was stunned. It is a great feeling to help someone out. Can't wait to see what else you turn up.
