Cleaning Sterling Ring

Today I had about 90 minutes to hunt a cove of the Columbia River, expecting to find a few coins. I did find some coins but also found a monogrammed ring marked sterling buried in the muck. It's more or less dark and discolored, except one tiny spot that appeared to be wrapped in tape (?)

Anyway, I'd like to clean it up and would like advice.

A little baking soda and water will remove the surface tarnish and shine it right up!

Well, the pic doesn't really show it due to poor lighting, but the ring cleaned up pretty well. Enough to find the crack the tape was hiding. This was the first non-costume ring I've found at this cove so I think hanging out with mownomo last week rubbed off some ring mojo. :grin:

How does electrolysis work on silver? Have you tried that?

My wife and I have our gold wedding rings cleaned once a year. They use electrolysis and the rings come out nice and shiny.

I've found that toothpaste works really well to clean and polish silver!

Cleaning silver artifacts is much difficult than simple toothpaste. See below for before and after photo of a 3rd Cent Roman ring.

Those look great. How did you do it?

DOH!

Make a simple paste of A&H Baking Soda, apply it to a soft cotton towel, then rub/scrub both sides in an easy circular manner without pressing down too hard, is not at all. Circular motions and then rinse under running water.
