Cold Saturday Hunt. Nice Button spill

I went out today looking for an old farm house to hunt. It took a couple of hours, but I finally found a house with somebody home and thankfully they said yes. My first three finds were 3 1800s Illinois Central Railroad buttons. All found within a 3' radius. after those I hunted for about a half hour before I hit a little hot spot. First I pulled out a 1917 buff, then about ten minutes later I got another bouncy 12-12 signal. About 5" down I pull out a no date buff. I re-swept the hole and now clear as day, I had a 12-44 at about 7''. I open it up, dug a little deeper and out pops a 1927 Merc.
Not bad for a COLD Saturday in January!

Those buttons are the BOMB Don! I swear you always find the coolest buttons. The old coins are great too, especially for a frozen January hunt. Thanks for posting and HH, Dave.

I couldn't see what the symbol was on my phone when you sent it to me today. My phonears was dying.

A few years ago I found two POD (postal delivery) buttons under the old clothes line not far from each other.
Maybe you were near a old clothes line? I pictured the wife pulling the uniforms off of the clothes line over the years and losing one every now and then. The two I found were a little different designs. With different back marks.

Nice find with those buttons, Don. Did you nail down a more accurate date for those? Ol' Dave likes to argue about the ball buttons being two piece, but generally they started around 1838 being two piece even tho my reference says 1830. The railroad says it started 1851, completed in 1856, extended in 1870, and operated until 1998. I'd guess they later having that much gilt still left.

Interesting on Waturbury button. They been around since 1812 and I think one of the buttons I found this summer was a Benedict button.

Hey Don,
Waterbury used that back mark from 1849 to 1965 so that kind of narrows down the date range down considerably! :happy:

Finding one great example of a nice vintage button is always a good day but to getting three is very uncommon and a great hunt! :cheering:congrats Don !

Wanted to post those buttons of mine here. Ever feel like you're apart of a different era? Spent an hour fiddling with the dam computer and cannot figure out how to post the pictures! Tried mailing it to me, and then grabbing it and pulling it onto the screen and I don't know why it's not working. Think I belong in the community of the "Deaf and Dumb." Doesn't help I'm trying to do this from the library computer, but come on! This is why I don't post finds. :girlcry: Will try again later when I get home.
