Couldn't take it any more

There is a property I have permission to detect that I did well at previously. The standing colonial was removed and I detected it a while ago with good results again. Now the bulldozers have removed top soil from a good chunk of the land. I kept wanting to go there but did not make the time for it. So with the almost complete melting of the last snow, I had to get in that soggy, muddy field  It was dark, it was cold :frozen: and it was muddy. Well I thought it was thawed, but in reality the first inch was mud, the next 2-3 inches were solid ice mud.:girlcry: Below that it was soft. So I decided to just cherry pick any targets that were right on top. The areas they remove about 8 inches had just a few iron hits. The areas they took about 3" was loaded with iron and the occasional tiny scrap targets. My fingers were screaming at me for getting the gloves soaked in the cold mud. I told myself, I'll leave after the first good target..... Then it happened, a solid 12-47 at 5". Add the 3" they removed and it is now at 8" deep :notworthy: Now the fun part, trying to break through that layer of ice and not damage the coin. It took a while, but I eventually got a line carved deep enough on both sides of the coin to break big enough chunks away and get to the coin depth. Only problem is that when I got there I could not get a hit on the coin. Panic sets in as I figured I flipped the target out of the hole. No go. I actually stood the target up on edge in the hole. Finally it was out and I ran the machine over it and it still said 12-47  I get it in my hand and in the darkness I can see a quarter size coin. I'm outta there!!! Once home, and after having visions of early silver, I get a good look at my prize....Here it is in all it's glory. The year has begun for me....it can only go up from here :)

:hystericallaugh: Great details- hilarious story! I could feel the anticipation and the disappointment

We have all done that at one time or other, but my friend Doug did the reverse. After a hunt in which we had found Large Cents and Indian, Two Cent piece etc he said he got a couple of clad quarters but one of them looked funny, I looked at it and told him you need to wash it off....yep it was an 1808 Half Cent...he didn't know whether to be tickled or ....embarrassed!

Well when I got my detector I didn't even step off my patio and got a signal, said a quarter and I just laughed but I said I gotta dig it. I did with the same results you had. You brought back a good memory because I just stood there and said really, the dreaded 65 Washington. I guess it was better then a crusty zincoln. Safe & HH

Thanks for sharing that- what a surprise on that one! It could've ended up back in circulation for a bit

Another great find from the G man!!:clapping: I must have found a few hundred of those. Last time I checked they were worth 25 cents. With the temps close to 50 this weekend, head back there. Don't forget to invite Dan this time!
