so the other day me and chrisinct got permision to detect a house from the 1700s and as you saw by an earlyer post by chris he got a william the 3rd penny but just before he found that i found what i thought till yesterday was a 1763 penny, but after giving it a bit in olive oil i see the date is , i think , 1788 but here is the thing , the strike on it looks like it was done by a four year old !!!!.
the actori connect is struck way over to the right of the face and when you flip it straight over expecting to find the date at the bottom its not ? its way over to the left ?like 90 degrees ?.
the pics aint great i know but can someone help me out with the type ? and clarify the date as thay see it ?

Ct coppers are such inferior metal :dontknow: They NEVER come out with details....and weirdly off center. I think I read there are around 40 varieties of 1788s Maybe they were drinking when they produced these coins lol

wow Lee its gonna be a hard one to id , the good news is there are only about 37 varieties of the 1788 year. the key areas to look at are pretty rough and i cannot confirm any one variety but the Miller 16.5-H looks somewhat close

Drew the copper was usually of decent quality but the dies were pretty crude and would wear out and break pretty easily which explains the large number of varieties. the 1787 year had 241 different varieties . i recommend this good book for reference on the colonial coins .
