Hey yall, I wanted to let everyone know about a new show coming out. Two good friends of mine Bill Ladd and Howard Hewitt finally have a show. You guys may have seen Bill and howard on You tube that is where they got there start. In a few of there videos they wear shirts that are from New England Diggers that is the group that i dig with, you can find us on Facebook. These guys live for the Passion over profit belief of there digging. Bill and Howard are a wealth of knowledge and hopfully will do this hobby some justice. Here is a little info on there show from the travel channel.

September 4th :crazy:m eastern time.

Generally speaking, reality TV usually leaves me feeling like I need to wash my brain out with lye. But I'll give this a chance and see what it's got. You never know, I've been surprised before.

Coinshooter i'll give this show a one episode viewing as i do with all that have come onto the stage but i really don't expect this one to be any different :eyebrow:. these shows are directed toward the general public for entertainment purposes and not the real genuine hobbyists .

on a side note , i've viewed a few videos by Mr.Ladd and was not very impressed with his knowledge of what he found as he often misidentified some coins and relics . I do hope he's better in this show .

Del, I understand what your saying about the reality TV side of the shows. Watching shows like Diggers, you see one of the guys jumping in a puddle after he finds a coin. First thing I thought was wait, how the hell was that not staged with the camera on the other side of the puddle. I think, alot of the crazyness is production induced.

As for Mr. Ladd, everyone is intitled to there opinion. What I do know is that like some shows Bill doesnt sell everything that he finds. Most of the time he could care less about the value.

I will say this, all these damn shows make people think that they are going to get rich swinging a magic wand in there back yard. Lets be real how many of us actually make a million detecting. Main streaming the hobby could cause problems for us all in the near future.

Im excited to see how the show turns out, I will be with Bill and Howard during the premier of there show.

Dan, I meant I will be at their premier party, watching there show with them. The group I dig with was invited. Only 4 of us but it will be fun.

Tanacat, like I said in the previous post, I think &quot:grin:iggers is a great show, I just think that the production team eggs them on to act crazy.

I think he is saying he will be watching the premier with the 2 friends, not actually be on the first show, unless I'm misunderstanding.

Here is my question, which will further inform my response to this show. Who are these shows directed towards? The general public (non-detectorists), or those involved in the hobby?

I ask because if it's the former (non-detecting general public) then I see no point in these shows at all, as from my perspective as a detectorist I would rather keep the hobby between those of us who enjoy and appreciate it enough to have sought it out for our own reasons, rather than giving the public whatever impression they come away with (which is generally that there is treasure to be found in everyone's backyard). While I appreciate that these particular detectorists may not be in it for the monetary value, I am guessing that will be lost on the general public.

If it is instead directed at detectorists, then that is a different ball game, because I can understand that some detectorists like to watch others detect. It would be akin to fishing or hunting shows which are definitely directed at fishermen and hunters (I can think of nothing more boring than watching someone else fish - except maybe watching people try to hit a little white ball into a hole with a metal club).

Anyway, personally I love to read about and view pictures of other detectorists' finds but I avoid the videos like the plague.... I figure that if I have enough time to be watching all these videos of other people detecting, I'd rather just be out doing it myself, you know? But the point is that I can see that some detectorists may be interested in such a show.

I am betting, though, that like the other shows, this is directed at the general public. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Well i watched the two show episodes last night and I'm sorry to say it really wasn't any different than the other three. inflated monetary values (a rusty iron two tine fork $100 ) , overexaggerated excitement  , very scripted dialogue . I wish Bill and Howard well but i won't be viewing this or any of the other shows as they do the hobby way more damage than good .

The monetary values were pretty crazy. I thought it was a good show, but thats my biased opinion.

Very tuff to stomach this series. While I admire their enthusiasm, I found myself cringing every time these two would speak.

Just one more example of making us hardcore detectorist looking like some childish idiots. Very unrealistic, this series is one of the most disappointing.

Nothing to do with the accent. More about how every item they dug could possibly be related to Black Beard or Billy the Kid very unrealistic. Everything seemed staged. I am sure they were put in a tuff spot by the producers with very limited time so I don't blame them.

If the producers were aiming at entertaining people then I think they failed miserably. In my opinion The viewers that make an attempt to watch these shows don't want to watch a comedy, they want to learn about history and the hobby of metal detecting.

I appreciate their experience and how they can see good target areas by examining the terrain. The constant banter was a little over the top for me personally but they look like they'd be fun to have a beer with.

One thing I wish these shows would do a better job of is not making it look like someone can just pull over someplace and start swinging without getting permission. There is a written disclaimer at the end but it is little and fast.

I'm not a fan of these shows it's just trouble for the real detectorists out there. Everything is money money and a competition. No good for us great for ATPro sales and unfilled holes on public parks.

I watched the first one and all I can say is a BIG disappointment again. I do not understand why they all have to act so childish and so damm over the top with enthusiasm, it is an embarrassment.

all these shows seem the same its all staged and i hate to say but it sheds a bad light on those that do it for a hobby or pastime too bad they cant make one right maybe someday dennis

As I stated in regards to the other unwatchable detecting show.
If I got the opportunity to get paid to travel and medal detect I'd act like an idiot too if that's what the producers wanted.
I wouldn't feel good about myself for doing it,but what a dream job to have.

Who among us wouldn't ?

I wouldn't.

That's just me, though.

Chris if i didn't have total control on what would be the final outcome was i would pass , i would be stepping on the real hobbyists out there and i don't think i could look at myself in the mirror knowing what i might be doing is hurting them in the long run. they (the cast members) know what they are doing it , haven't seen anyone leave their shows yet so they are selling out whether they want to acknowledge it or not.
