Feeling guilty 1788 2 Reale and 1804 Large Cent found today

I'm starting to feel guilty finding so many great things over the past month. In just the last week or so I found a 1785 half reale, 1858 seated half dime, 1820 large cent, a shield nickel, V nickel, 5 Indians, a nice silver ID bracelet, silver cross, silver religious medal and 8 other silver dimes. Today takes the cake. I got permission to hunt a private yard with about 5 acres and a house from the 1780's or so. It started out slow as it seems some of the area had been resurfaced. I go to another spot where the grass looks older. I know it sounds funny that the grass looks older, but it had more weeds and just wasn't perfect. I finally get a signal and 9" down I pull up a 1788 2 reale. I could immediately see the date and general condition was quite nice. I slow down and pull a few flat buttons and what appears to be part of a buckle. I then get another signal and about 6" down I pull a large cent. I can see by the profile that it's draped bust, but it wasn't until I got back to the car and could rinse it off did I realize it was an 1804! For those who have a Redbook, look up an 1804 large cent. They are rare. I'm starting to feel guilty about finding so much lately, but I'm going back tomorrow. I know there's more stuff there and my club had a hunt scheduled nearby in a couple of weeks.

Guilty feeling, that should not be the emotion you're feeling. :wow:on those finds. I don't think that I have ever seen a 1804 LC posted before....:congrats:. Please keep us posted on your next hunt to that house. Sounds like a super spot.

Here's the deal, if you are up this way scooping all the finds then you should feel guilty. But if you are there in NY getting all those finds, it's ok. Congrats tho. Not sure if cleaning the 1804 is a good idea. It has some details left, but it looks like you might lose the date from cleaning. (Part of the 8 and 0 are already gone). Well, the fact that there were only 96,500 circulation strikes, there were less made thant the 1877 IH, but what I found is the Tin "restrike" of the 1804 is the rare one, as well as the "1860" restrike having the 1803 obverse and 1820 reverse.

No worries Mango. They were found in NY. I've cleaned it as much as I'm going to. When they start to get crusty if you clean them harshly you clean away any detail you had. It's a shame. Looking closely at the coin is has XF details where it's not pitted.

Wow, two mind blowing finds in one hunt! :notworthy:

Look at the detail on that 2 Reales! It must have been brand new when it was dropped! :loveit:

And that 1804 Large Cent is a rare one indeed! Definitely a key and the date is clear and unmistakable. HUGE congrats on the incredible finds!

Well, we all have our tastes. Some, it's the thrill of the hunt. Some, it's the thrill of the finds. When the coins come out with the detail, it's just icing. I am quite sure you know the earlier comment was only facetious.

1804 largie......"hell yer" , an early large cent is on my wish list so bloody well done mate.
if your feeling guilty tell me where you live and ill come round and mug you for it.....:)

look at you getting all technical ......lmao

Great find Don. We have had our share of 1804 HALF cents, but we are always disappointed when we try for that date on a Large cent. That is an incredible find. :groovy: Never feel guilty about saving a coin from ground destruction. In a couple more years no one would be able to tell that was an 1804. That 2 Reales ain't too shabby either Don

wow the 1804 starts out at $700 in AG . Don, out of all the beautiful coppers you guys pull up in NY , why not this one too:overreaction::girlcry:?? was it near a swampy area or fertilized field?? Great looking 2 reale :smitten:

Del, the soil was mostly clay and wet. It's really a shame as it has XF details where not pitted. Either way, when I saw it was an 1804 I couldn't believe it.

Good for you Don. Don't feel guilty, feel confident. Confidence will find you more of the "good stuff". :congrats:
