Field hunt LC caps off a good week for me

So the corn and hay are now being cut in earnest here so it's the time of year to start widening the targets of opportunity in places other than the deep woods. Hit some old fields with a good friend yesterday (Sunday), but on his side (NY) of the Champlain Valley. Lots of history at this site and it came through for me in nice fashion via an 1834 Matron Head LC. Curious in that it was my first diggable (sp.?) target only about 10 minutes after I started and ironically in the first corn row. Weird. I also dug plenty of flat buttons, most of which are common fare. Did like the floral-patterned cuff button though. There are shards of old hand made glass and pottery literally everywhere at this site, and strewn hundreds of yards in all directions. Old pottery/porcelain enthusiasts would be in heaven here. Hi Brian,

Yes I did. It's a Vermont GAR or Vermont Sons of Veterans medallion from the c.1910-1920 era or so. No makers mark so the expert I contacted gave me his best estimate of a date range.

Congrats on the LC. It is funny how some hunts go. I've found coppers within 10 seconds of starting then get shut out for the rest of the hunt. Just the opposite has happened too. Get shut out all day then hit a copper on your last couple of swings.

with all the targets and glass and pottery , you must have an old home site in that field . targets can get spread out for a couple of acres after many years of plowing keep at it John ! and congrats on the large cent .

Thanks Dan, and yes you're correct. There are several old home sites on this field, but all were gone by the time the 1856 Walling maps were made. Just subtle mounds and the shards/pieces of brick. There have been over 50 coppers pulled from this site (numerous fields) so happy they coughed up 1 for me.

sounds like a great set of fields John , I'm very envious :envious: remember to take it slow in the iron .

Nice looking Large Cent, yes I am glD they are cutting crops too just saw today beans were cut on what has been a decent field so far.
