First gold with my E-Trac, plus 1867 Indian, Merc - UPDATE

Nothing on my agenda today, so I thought I'd get up early and hunt the old park again. Conditions are terribly dry here, but the digging is still relatively easy in this park. The grass is pretty much completely dead. I arrived at the park at 6:00 a.m. sharp to try and beat the heat. It's in the upper 90s here again today.

My first find of the day was an 1867 Indian Head Cent. It is the oldest Indian Head I have found at this park. Like the other Indian Heads I have found there, it came out of the ground looking fairly decent. About an hour later I found another Indian Head, this one was dated 1880.

Since I had plenty of time to hunt today I decided to dig a lot more nickel signals. There has to be some old nickels in this park but danged if I can find them! Digging the nickel signals did pay off, however, with a small gold ring. It rang up at 12-11 on the E-Trac. It isn't marked but I am 99% sure that it is gold. I will have to test it, but I don't currently have a test kit.

After that I found a lone Merc to save me from the SDHOS. The park was reluctant to give up many finds today, but that is expected in these extremely dry conditions. The gold ring made it a very fun hunt! It is the first gold I've found with my E-Trac.

Here are today's keepers:

This 1867 Indian Head is my second oldest:

Here's the 1880 Indian Head:

And the 1936 Mercury Dime:

The gold ring is very small, it must be a child's ring:

Thanks for looking and Happy Hunting!

Re: First gold with my E-Trac, plus 1867 Indian and a Merc

Very nice Tony! That ring is definitely gold too. Congrats on all your finds. I'd say that 1867 wasn't in circulation too long before it was dropped. I can see the LIBERTY on the headdress. Maybe we'll get some rain soon and I can go MDing. I spotted a really OLD park in a small town on one of my bike rides. It's at the top of my to-do list. Dave.

Great hunt tony! :congrats: I really enjoyed the video. Those indian head pennies were in fantastic condition. When I find em in Southern Iowa they're always really eaten up. WTG on the gold ring!

Thanks for the nice replies, everyone!

I went back to the same park again this morning. Not quite so hot today, just in the mid 80s. Nice! But boy, the finds are becoming very infrequent in this park. I hunted it for over 6 hours today and didn't have a lot of keepers to show for it. I guess I'll have to give it a rest until fall.

Nevertheless, I did find two more older Indian Head Cents today. That makes 9 Indians from this park and all of them are dated 1881 or older. Rather strange that there aren't any Indian Heads from the 1890s or 1900s. Oh well, I'm not complaining! I love finding the older ones. There may even be some fatties in this park. I may have to try digging some deeper 12-22 and 12-23 signals.

Here are today's finds:

Two awesome hunts Tony!! :clapping: Silver, gold and IH's... can't ask for more. My vote is real gold.

The age of the IH's from this park is incredible. Plus the soil is very kind to them. A great combo. thumbsup01

Looking forward to your next hunt there. :->

:perfect10:!! :congrats: On the Gold Tony! Looks like the real thing to me too. The 1867 is in beautiful condition! thumbsup01! The Merc sure is pretty! WTG Tony on a great hunt! Question. Did the ring come out of the ground clean? I know silver does. But All I've found was a gold plated, and gold filled. Which does show signs of oxidation.

Yes, gold does come out of the ground clean. If you have time to watch the video you can see the ring coming out of the dirt clod. Nice and shiny.
