kevin's photos 404.jpgkevin's photos 403.jpgIt got above freezing today so I couldn't resist getting out with my new five inch coil. I went to an old park that I have been to many times with my Etrac and dug a steady 12-4 signal, and at seven inches deep I found this......Love my etrac.IMAG0271.jpg

Wow, what the heck is that? Nice looking piece. Not sure on age but if I found it, my first impression is Victorian.

wow kev , that is stunning !!!! ill be interested to see if its 24krt gold as i think it is.
if thats not a banner find i dont know what is ?

I have been looking and the only thing even close is a cufflink.

It's an odd looking piece. I want to say it is a lid to something small, maybe a snuff box. That hole may not be to wear it, since it would hang wrong. That hole may be where a post is located so you can swing the piece off to the side and expose the inner part of a box. Just a thought on it.

very interesting item Kevin , have you had a jeweler look at it ?? i'd be curious to hear what their assessment would be .

Thats one nice piece of gold. congrats on the great find. like everyone else puzzled as to what it is.

I found these two items online they bear a resemblance to the item you found. There victorian the cuff link said circa 1880's and the other is a locket.IMG_4013.JPG

That is great research :clapping: That first one looks promising. The hole may have been drilled at a later time and not part of the original function. Super job NJJOSH :thumbsup01:

Interesting find, tried to look around online and even asked my wife what she thought, she wasn't sure either. She has a lot of knowledge in historic fashion and jewelry. Unusual to stump her on something like that. Good luck in figuring out what it is. Safe & HH

Thanks everyone, The jeweler said that he did not know what it was either. He scratched it and said that he thought the center was gold over another metal and that he felt that the outside rim was solid gold. Either way...it looks good in my display case.
