Found my 1'st cellar hole today

Did some research this winter when a friend mentioned seeing a long stone wall along one of their game club properties. I did find a home on a mid 1800's map that is along the edge of that property. So after their turkey hunt, we hiked in to check it out this afternoon. Found the site, which is badly overgrown. And after more poking around in endless plants with thorns, found the hole. Gonna have to go back with a blowtorch or napalm. :lol:

I keep hand clippers and a folding saw in my pack now, and spent 15 minutes cleaning a small area to see if there was hope. Got a tack ring near the hole giving me a nice tone, so that's a good sign. Only had a few hours to play, and wasted a bunch getting to it.

congrats on finding your first cellar Brian , be careful in them prickly thorns as they are usually a haven for the ticks.

Nice. Shredded legs is your ticket into the cellar hole hunters club. Get your self a pair of LL Bean briar proof pants if you are going to venture in to that stuff. They really do protect your legs. And like Dan says, ticks galore. They will climb a foot or two up on those briars and just launch themselves on you when you brush up against them. Tough swinging a coil at a site like that but those briars might be protecting a lot of buried goodies.

Thanks everyone! I'll tell ya' Drew, finding the first one was more than 10%, especially after tromping an hour through that stuff. I have a much greater appreciation for hole hunting after yesterday.

And I'm well equipped in the pants department for detecting Lodge Scent. A buddy of mine on Facebook recommended the Deluth Trading Deluthflex Ultimate Fire Hose Cargo Pants, and I bought a pair over the winter. They're tough as hell, have a lot of pockets, very comfortable through all movements, and have a large pocket area in the knee area that accepts lightweight flexible pads. I can walk 10 miles a day, every day, no problem. But my knees hate kneeling on hard ground. Zero issues this year. 75 bucks for the pants and 10 for the pads, and I cannot recommend them enough. So much better than traditional knee pads in the woods. You barely know they're in there. Finding out they were thorn-proof too was a bonus.

Unfortunately, this hole will be a pet project at best. I can only access the club land if I'm with someone who is a member. Plus people are hunting in the area. Maybe one day I can get a special permission to access it.

Interesting. I literally bought a pair just yesterday from Duluth trading around 2p. Obvi pants are still required in the woods whether it's spring, fall, or summer, and my old cargos were getting a hole in the side pocket where I usually put coin finds. Now I need to find a good pair of shorts that are stain resistant and tough. Yes, I know Duluth carry shorts but I wanna see other options. The pants; underarmour made some at $100, then next up were the stuff you can get at Cabela's for $150-250, but Duluth had good ratings and their customer service was reviewed as excellent. We'll see how well they work.

Brian if your going to get into the briars and saplings get a set of bugskinz or rhino skins to wear under your regular clothes so the ticks can't get at your skin.

Thanks Dan. This will be a tough sell to someone who doesn't detect. I can only get on the land by escort, so not expecting any more trips here honestly.
It's just odd seeing the entire site (acres) polluted with that stuff. Can only guess that was a non-native species planted there?

Just think of the memories you've acquired or maybe you'd like to forget. I hacked at thorns & vines for hours around an old house that was falling down only to find what was the remains of the plumbing, wiring and window frames the "crackheads" left behind when the police ran them off. Not fun.
