Short 2 hr hunt, 2 old flat buttons, one is sliver plated, 2 wheat pennies, Musketball, a Junk Ring & my oldest Indian Head Penny, 1864, Found all these except the ring in the most unlikely spot on an old baseball infield, I hunted all around it & never did the baseball diamond thinking there was fill dirt layed down, not so, the small flat button was laying on the surface, all the others were less than 4" deep

Nice early Indian. :clapping: Just some water and a wooden toothpick should clean that up a bit. Looks like it is not that corroded. Nice find!! Nice old flat buttons and musket balls. You just never know what you are going to find or where you are going to find it at. :dontknow:

Congrats on your oldest Indian Head Cent! My oldest is also 1864, still looking for my first "fatty".

I agree with coinnut on cleaning it. Many of my Indian Heads have turned out nicely using that method.

:congrats:

It's the one that reads lower than a normal IH. don't know a lot about the fatties. I know I was surprised to see it because it read a 26 on my Safari when IH's usually read 32-33. So I guess that would make it the Cupro Nickle version

It would be twice as thick "fattie" as a normal Indian head. Stack two normal Indians against it and if they are fairly even, it's a fattie. But that makes a big difference in cleaning it. I would just use a dry tooth brush and get as much dirt off as you can. Don't go too hard to let the surface peel off, or you will lose detail and it may have an unappealing rust color to it. You want to keep whatever patina is on there, to stay on there.
