gold pendent....possably ?

oi oi folks,ive just found what seems to be a very old pendent ...it looks 18th century to me and i was wondering if there was some sort of test i can do at home to find out if its gold or not.
cant see any hallmarks on it but im still cleaning it.
when did thay start putting hall marks on gold anyway ?

hey Lee can you post a picture or two of the brooch , finding a hallmark really depends on the origin of the piece. obviously British and European makers would have put hallmarks on their items alot earlier the American ones.
