My first gold coin

Was able to get out and hunt Saturday afternoon at a park w/several old house sites I found on 1861 county map. I've found 2 scalloped Five Cent trade tokens, lots of mason jar lids and labor items from late 1800's. My friends have found silver & IH... so anyway the sun was setting when I found my first gold coin :happydance01: ... or so I thought :crying:

It was dark when I got in the car to take a closer look. I rinsed it gently to expose a more gold. I could read Augusta and texted hubby. "omg I think I found..." When I got home he was pretty convinced too. Until we got out the loupe :( The gold is flaking off, so I think either from charm bracelet or maybe counterfeit??? I'm hoping the latter of course. I had the biggest 10 min adrenaline endorphin rush and then burst bubble into deep depression

The pics I took w/my phone turned out really good in the dark--- really looked like a gold coin. Will post from phone, until then here's an example of what I found.

Faustina Jr Denarius. FAVSTINA AVGVSTA, draped bust right / HILARITAS, Hilaritas standing left, holding long palm and cornucopiae

It's exactly like this but with a hole on top. I rationalized it was to put on a chain like they did in the old days...
VDI was around 46-50 if I remember correctly

Yeah maybe its real bronze coin but coated with gold to make jewelry  should I soak in oil to get gold off I wonder...

I would just leave it the way it is. It may not even be a real coin but a replica, so I would just keep whatever is left of the gold on it. I bet it looked good.

don't you hate it when you think you have an amazing find and it turns out to be a bust, Happens to me all the time lol. Quick short story of the opposite effect. In january 2008 my first month ever detecting i dug up what i thought was a button. As i rubbed it a little i saw a star under the dirt well i got so excited and there was no water around. So i instantly not thinking licked the coin then realized I'm licking a 185 year old coin what is wrong with me haha. well i hope that made you laugh and not think I'm crazy.:)

Hahaha Not at all, I've done the same  And then handed it to a friend or property owner who is eager to take a look

The rush is what keeps us digging. And this near miss will keep you hungry for the real thing that's waiting for you. Safe & HH

Yes absolutely... After reading about the couple out West "John & Mary" who found those gold coins on their property I've had gold coins on my mind (more than usual) I know they're out there!!! WE know... :)

Thanks G I think you're right... it makes a good story to still see the gold!

I have had a similar thing happen with me , mine was a gold gilted token that looked just like a gold 10 dollar piece at first . Talk about rollercoaster ride of emotions , a ten second rush :shocked03::happy::loveit:only to realize :thinkingabout::crying01::girlcry::disgusted::hairpulling::ticked:its a brass gilted token :lol: well where are the pictures of it Tana ??

Wow! I know your heart was thumping. I thought I had found one one time. turned out to be a 1,000 peso.
