Nasty site gives up a copper

This is a cellar hole site I've been hunting for 12 years. It used to be wide open with plenty of room to swing a coil but now you can be standing 2 feet from it and not see it. I somehow managed to pull an 1827 Matron and a nice stick pin right from that tangled mess. The Matron was on edge.site 1.jpgCopper on edge 2.jpgfinds.jpg

Found my first barrel tap last week! After a good soak with WD40, the valve still turns. Those nickel plated buckles sure sound nice when you put you coil over them.

That's a sharp looking Matron! Any idea on the age of the stick pin? That is a neat find also.

I love the keg tap too! If only it could talk!

Good job being persistent in those tough conditions!

Congrats Jeff , the weather was almost perfect for hiking and detecting . some great saves .
on another note i've been back to sites that i've hit 10 to 15 years ago and some are almost unrecognizable now . its both good and bad in a way.

Hey Thanks guys!

Reb, it seems that these days it site like that are about the only place to finds some goodies.

Tony, that site was active from about 1750 to 1850, so any time in that span.

Dan, I think between the carpenter ants destroying the oaks, fuzzy aphids and nematodes killing the beech trees, and the high winds knocking over the pines, that there is now too much sunlight reaching the ground at a lot of these sites. Those green briars and other prickly vines and shrubs just grab hold and take over a site. I might head back there with some pruning shears.
