Navy Button.....NOT!

I was invited to hunt a field today with a friend. The field had just been plowed but we have not had any rain so it was a dry, dusty hunt. I found a lot of trash and some what is its before getting a loud banging signal in my headphones. I used the side of my shoe to push some dirt aside and exposed the RFD Mail lock. A little research showed it to be made by the Slaymaker Lock Company. I am not sure of the age but would guess that it is around 1900. My next signal was a little iffy but I dug it anyway. When the piece popped out of the ground I caught a glimpse of an eagle on an anchor and my first thought was Navy button... Oh Yeah!! Then I picked it up and turned it over to see the back mark. That's when I realized that it was an iron back and that means it is a civilian blazer button.
Oh well, I did get out on a beautiful day so that was a plus and the lock was a decent find. The quarter is just for size.

This site covers about 400 acres. There used to be about 400 houses. So far we have found about 20 of them.

They were built in the early 1800s but most were abandoned by the 1870s when the county seat was moved.

Sorry that your Navy button turned out to be a civilian. Sounds like a great spot to hunt
