I just recently acquired permission to detect a rather large private property with a house dating back into the mid 1700's. A pretty historic site, not only does it have a nice house with an acre or two of lawn, it has two huge barns, plus about 15-20 acres of fields that get hayed. Needless to say last week when it was first mentioned to me I was chomping at the bit to get out there. I had Monday and Tuesday off this week, I had slacked on my taxes!!! By mid day Monday, motivated by this new site, I was done with my return, with a hefty refund to boot!

It was 88 degrees on Monday, and most of the property was dry, I did a circuit around the house, trying to find the shady sections that still had moist soil. It was quite an internal fight I had going on because I knew the closer I went to the house the more goodies I'd find. However, the soil was just too dry to dig plugs.

I opted for the section from the road going into the carriage house/barn area, which was shaded with pine trees. I was excited when I thought I saw a very worn half dime in my hole. It turned out to be a very small silver 1 piece flat button. I'm pretty sure it's colonial, and I've always wanted to find a solid silver button!!. I found a bunch of 40's 50's toys as well as a nice musket ball in this area. I did find a buffalo nickel, but when I got home it wasn't in my pouch!! I must have dropped it, so I'll be looking for that when I go back. Just about when I was done gridding this section I got a nice hit that turned out to be some sort of large copper. I'm really not sure what it is, it has a left facing bust. I think it may be a KG II+ half penny, if I squint at the reverse I think I can see the shield etc. This side of the property was the least disturbed according to the owner and the recoveries found there proved him correct.

Next I visited the other side of the property where there was a 50's addition, near a section of shade by a stone wall. That's where I found a bunch of my wheatie's, and of course the nice half dollar!!! More toys and other assorted items. Near the front as I was walking from one shaded area to another I got blasted by a SWEET signal I could not pass up, I made the smallest most carefully dug plug and up popped a Washington quarter and a merc!! I really wanted to keep swinging in that area, but it was so dry I saved it for a rainy day. :)

Lastly, I hit the fields and managed to find a 50 yard wide hot spot near an opening in the stone wall leading into the field. I made about twenty 50 yard passes gridding up and down in the hot sun. Every pass I had at least 2-3 targets, bells, copper fixtures and hard ware, some cool buttons. No coins to speak off, but they have to be there!!

Well that sums up my first two visits at this new site, all totaled, I think I spent 8 hours there and netted some sweet finds!!! What excites me is I have not even detected close to the house yet!! I can't wait for the rain!

Enjoy the pics.

Very nice location, lets pray for some rain so you can hunt everywhere there. Congrats on getting that silver button. Your silver coins I think are just the tip of the iceberg. looking forward to your future finds and posts
