New to detecting. Central Illinois

Hello. I'm new to metal detecting and I'm looking for some help and advice with my machine and detecting. I just received a Fisher CZ-5. I have already figured the basics of the machine but need help with the finer tuning. If anyone can help I would appreciate it. Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum! I'm sure someone here can help you fine tune your detector. I'm a Minelab guy so I'm no help at all. Where at in central Illinois? I'm in SW Illinois down by STL. Best wishes and HH, Dave.

Welcome to the forum And hobby from SE Wisconsin. I'm not familiar with your detector but I'm sure you will find some help here. Good luck and happy hunting.

Welcome to the forum, Stephen!

It was nice talking with you on the phone yesterday. I'm not sure how much practicing you've done with the CZ5, but I would start out in the factory preset settings to start with so you can get used to the sounds and what the detector is telling you. Dig all of the repeatable signals at first. You can also make a test garden in your own yard by burying a few different types of coins to hear what they sound like with your detector.

Best of luck and keep us posted on your progress!

Welcome to the group! So you're detecting in Two Cent's old neighborhood? Good luck

I look forward to your posts!

Yes, a pinpointer can be a huge asset trying to find some elusive target in the hole or plug. Just make sure you get a good one like the Garret or Whites. I have both, just prefer the Whites for the longer range. The Garret isn't as "chatty" as the Whites, and i think is a bit easier to use.

I tried detecting at a small beach today. I kept getting false and fading signals. I need to figure the sand setting on my detector.

While I'm not familiar with your beaches in central ill. I can say that from my experience here in Wisconsin that we have a lot of black sand and iron rich rocks that seem to be around a lot of water here. At best it makes detecting tough in those situations. If you have a setting for salt water, try that, it may help. Also, run your sensitivity really low. That will minimize falsing, and keep the coil from blinding itself. Imagine headlights in thick fog with the high beams reflecting back at you. Same concept with coil signals in mineral rich areas.

Welcome from western MA. Keep at it, the more you use that detector the better you get at it. Looking forward to seeing some great finds.

Welcome to the forum from northern Illinois! :peace:
Glad to have you aboard!
A pin pointer is a must have in my book. I'm so spoiled by pin pointers, I wouldn't even go out detecting without one. Unless it was a special place and it was going to be the only time that I was able to hunt it.....
