This is an unusual piece.
I think it is Gold (Not marked) It's a little bigger than a quarter in size.
It commemorates the start of the war with Germany and France
The Verdun was the city in France where the Germans attacked
And the 21 Fevrier 1916 was the date the war started
February 21, 1916
The war lasted until December 19, 1916.
I would rather find a goody like this than 50 silvers any day
Here's a link to some info
Good reading!!

Very beautiful and interesting piece.... nice homework on it as well. Good job!
Looks silver in the pic. Could be the lighting.

Very beautiful find and great information! As you said, I would rather find something like that than a silver coin most any day. (ducking... lol )

I don't think I have seen one like it before.

nice tim!
i'm not trying to rain on the parade or anything but,it may be brass.looks to me it may have come off a bar & ribbon.I could be wrong but just letting you know brass is a yellow metal too.
very cool find though.i love war stuff!

p.s. just found this site....
here is a link with the same exact medal.scroll half way down the page.you'll see it
http://www.diggerhistory.info/pages-medals/victory-medal3.htm

French Verdun WWI Battle Medal (approx 25mm), correct unmounted ribbon. This unofficial (semi-official) medal was available to all US Veterans awarded the Meuse Argonne Clasp, however few took the action necessary to obtain the medal.

Thanks for the link Dave thumbsup01 thumbsup01
The only reason I thought it might be gold is that it came out of the ground this color.
You're probably right about it being brass.

hey it doesn't hurt to dream! but unless this was made for the french president or ambassador i'd assume it's brass.trust me i pulled many brass items that got my heart a pumpin.the only way to make a positive test for gold is to do an acid test on it.
i pray it is gold for your sake!
still an awesome find regardless thumbsup01

thats a very cool piece of history Tim , items like that i'd take over a coin any day as well . you both could be right as i have found more than one token or charm that was brass but was also gold plated too.

Rightous find, Tim...!
I'd put something like that WAY above any of my spanish reales.
