Not a detecting find, but still a rare score!

Hi all,

Working my second job as a bartender this past weekend someone made a really nice contribution to the tip jar-a 1953 red seal $2 note!

I was one of the 1,000s who hoarded $2 bills in the 70s when they came out. We all thought they were a new bill produced to commemorate the bicentennial. I guess they've been around for 150 years. We just got rid of our stack of 1976s because they never appreciated in value. What made me do a quick search was your reverse is not what I remember. I bet yours is really worth something! This is the previous version of the $2 note than what you collected as this one is series 1953. It's what was in circulation between the current iteration and the previous silver certificate. If you notice it still has the phrase "will pay to the bearer in demand" between the "United States of America" and "Two Dollars" at the bottom center of the obverse.

As to the history of the note, the first was authorized as a continental note for national defense way back on June 25th, 1776 - 9 days before we officially became a country!

Nice find. I haven't seen any Silver Certificates in circulation the last couple of decades. Somebody raided Grandma's sock drawer.

Unfortunately this is not a silver certificate, but it is the transition era of the notes, with the "will pay to the bearer on demand" at the bottom.
