Park Hunting

I hit a park the last few mornings and dug a zillion clad dimes and 12 clad quarters. I could have dug more dimes but learned to exercise restraint....us cellar hole hunters LOVE those solid 83 signals at 5in! I found a little of everything! The finds include-

-1915 engraved gold pocket watch (yesterday contacted Boston Athletic Asso to see who won the sparring contest in 1915 but they lost records in a fire)
-1859 Fatty Indian
-1945 Merc
-1979 Anthony Dollar (1st)
-1972 Kennedy Half
-3 large musket balls (I'm going to ask the town's people if musters were held in this historic park)
-Sterling silver glove clip
-Saw medallion
-School graduation pin (modern)

The last pic is part of the display I gave to our historical society.
Thanks!

Drew, great display. I know about that restraint thing as I go back and forth......fields and parks. Sad that the info you were seeking was lost in a fire.

That pocket watch is cool! Lots of neat finds!
Thank you Bucknut...I love finding engraved items, especially with a date.

I don't do a lot of park hunting Al and I am surprised at the amount of clad dimes one could dig. They also get very deep for such a short time in the ground. Thanks, bud!

Lots of great finds there! I sure wish I had parks like that here. Nicely done!
The park is beautiful too...I'd LOVE to hunt some of the colonials surrounding this park!:daydream: Thanks DOD!

Nice park digs Drew. You might think you've been doing that all these years instead of detecting in the woods. Cool watch. Wonder if some old Boston newspapers might have that info.

Great display....though I don't see any ox shoes or ox knobs ;)

I tried looking up the Boston newspapers for info. The only thing I can come up with is the Boston Globe boxing results, bit it's a pay to retrieve service to non subscribers.
One name I found hinted at was a John Emery of East Cambridge in a March 1915 issue.

Thanks Jeff!
Thank you for the info DOD!! I just got back from another hour at that park and inexplicably found my 3rd Kennedy half ever! Two in two days. :shocked04:

"Clad dime Drew" , just doesn't have that ring as "Oxshoe Drew" great watch !! I hope the display is on loan and not permanently given to the society ?

Nice, Drew. That's why I like to mix it up with some park hunting. Grats on the musket drops and the fatty. That's the only year with the laurel wreath. I wonder if musket drops must have meant they had a muster or a training going on there. The watch is cool that it is somewhat personalized. I ran into a wall with research on the Kearny cross I found. SSS has no records from 1888 to ~1920s.

Great haul Drew! As you say, for a cellar hole hunter (like many of us!) to hit the parks you surely do need to practice patience. You just can't dig the mid-tones in many cases...just too many pull-tabs and junk! The display case at the historical society looks really sharp. HH!
