Relic hunting with Del

I have to say I wasn't getting that warm and fuzzy feeling about today's sites. But Del was, so that usually spells BINGO for me lol Today was no different. We got to the site and after doing the road for about 10 minutes, I headed up to the cellar hole to hunt the lip. I got a hit right away and it was this half cent looking coin. But it read 12-46 (too high). I was very happy :happydance01: I think it may be French (possibly Dutch too), but I couldn't find it in Breen's...so I don't know :dontknow: The very next signal about 3 feet away read 12-40 (like the first one should have read lol) It was a 1722 Wood's Hibernia copper :shocked04: ... :happydance01: :happydance01: :cheering: Dan and I were just talking about the dates on them (only 1722, 23 or 24) and I was saying I never get the rarer one (1722) Well this variety isn't as rare as other '22's are but it is listed in Breen's as #146 - Commonly Type II Not so rare, but rarer than the other dates. The third copper was toast The badge is a B.P.O.E. reunion badge from 1916. Not too much junk (I let Del dig that :tongue but some big pieces rang good enough that I had to see what they were. A pretty good hunt today!

lol yea, fleur de lys (3 of them) I saw this coin somewhere's but I don't remember where. I'll Google images until I find it :cheesysmile: I need a world coin book bad :thinkingabout: It almost looked like a Braped Bust Half Cent, with the portrait lookig a lot like lady Liberty at first.

i'm not sure on the dates as i've seen them coins in the 1700's as well , great day you had George and you didn't like the site either :bop: :bop: for doubting me

it was a beautiful cool day in the woods :happydance01: :happydance01: i see you found an insulator as well thumbsup01 heres my loot , a 3 crotal bell spill ( all in the same little 1 foot area) a few buttons , a beat to heck matron head large cent thats toast ( no closeup , i wasn't sure you guys wouldn't hurl cause she's U-G-L-Y , makes some Angels coppers look good) lol lol a nice complete shoe buckle ( my 3rd complete this year) and a half of a colonial copper with a date (1780) and a few trinkets , not a bad day at all.

Mine has a nice chip out of the back and was right on top of the ground :ticked: Is that a UFO taking off with your buckle?

yeah it took me awhile to bend it straight , didn't want to break it in half and you were right the detail was on the inside lol lol i thought it was a coin from the start. the large cent is truely dogmeat lol lol can't even get a date .

thanks Myownwings , Coinnut and i have been doing this for some years now and we have set our standards or goals pretty high for ourselves on what we want to find or get out of at a particular cellar hunt when we go . i guess after some time you just have certain expectations of yourself and what your going to find , we target colonial sites so we expect old coppers , button and buckles so if we find them its a good hunt its the quantity or the unusual unexpected find that could make it a great hunt. thumbsup01

lol yeah, I guess sometimes we take what we have in New England for granted. But after you dig your 600th flat button, the :happydance01: wears off a bit. We do set our goals and expectations high for a hunt, like Del said. It charges us up and keeps us from giving up. These places are hunted quite well over the years, and if we didn't push, we may come home empty handed.

Great finds guys. I'm sure there are more 1600's coins around. It's so amazing when you think of all the things that didn't happen yet when those coins were made. Been reading a little a bout the copper panic of 1799. Also about the government making lighter weight coppers worth next to nothing. Seems everytime there's a war either they take the copper or silver. No wonder why farmers and other's hoarded their money. Now finding that mason jar is another task. Anyone out there find a mason jar with change in it? I saw a video of a guy on Utube that found about 50 coins in a silver box. All of them were silver.I'll have to find the video and post it.
