Saturday With Digger Don & Noah, Sunday With Moose

I had a good time detecting this past weekend!



On Saturday I met up with Digger Don and Noah for some detecting in central Illinois. It was hot and humid but at least the rain stayed away. All three of us ended up with some good finds.

Here is a list of the coins I found on Saturday:
3 Indian Head Cents 1887, 1891, 1896
12 Wheat Cents
1 Barber Dime 1895-S
1 Rosie 1953-D
1 Barber Quarter 1907





I also found this neat store token but I'm not sure what town it's from.



I also found this object which I though was a hinge but it isn't. It's part of an old circa 1890s stove top finial. It says BECKWITH'S ROUND OAK.

On Sunday morning I met up with my wife's nephew Moose. He had several properties in town lined up for us to detect. Unfortunately it started raining around noon so our hunt was cut short. I did manage to get a spill of three Indian Heads dated 1902, 1903 and 1907, six wheat cents, a 1920 Buffalo Nickel, and a couple of tokens.



I found this amusing laxative token on Sunday. I had found one of these back in the early 1980s when I was detecting with my dad. This one is in better shape though.

Love the video, Tony! Nice truck! You guys have wonderful dirt to dig in. That's a huge haul of old coins...do you dig millions of copper memorials too...or do most of your properties have undisturbed strata, and you can concentrate on the deeper items? :clapping:

Thanks, Drew! We do dig a lot of memorial cents, but I do find myself ignoring signals that are less than 2 inches deep. I know that I could be missing good targets but I feel that I am optimizing my time by not digging all of those modern coins. For the most part I ignore all 12-44 signals that are shallow because those are almost always memorial cents.

And yes, the soil in central Illinois is black and rich. It is wonderful!

Nice finds. I love tokens so I looked up the Colonial Beer Restaurant token in the online token catalog. As of now, it is a maverick token as it is not known to what town the token should be attributed. There is also only one denomination listed (20 cents). Your five cent token is an unlisted denomination.
