Silver Ring Highlights Soggy Hunt

It was cold and rainy yesterday, but I managed a 3 hour hunt in between the rain showers. I went to a nearby school yard where a newer school stands, but there was an older school building on the same grounds back in the late 1800s.

I ended up with 2 Indian Heads, 3 Wheat Cents, 1 Buffalo Nickel and some clad. The highlight of the hunt was a nice sterling silver ring that was about 5 inches deep.

Unfortunately, the coins come out of the ground in bad shape at this site. There must be a lot of iron in the soil or something.

The Indian Heads are dated 1898 and 1906, the Buffalo Nickel is dateless.

The ring is marked sterling and is in good shape.

Here are the other relics I found. The small rectangular object says "COTY" on the bottom. I believe it is a lipstick or rouge case from the 1920s. The two purple earrings were about 5 feet apart and 4 inches deep. The thing that looks like a rock is a big chunk of lead or lead ore.

That soil sure was rough on those coins. I'm glad you were able to get out yesterday. We got 8 inches of snow dumped on us up here. :frozen:

Great finds Tony, too bad about the condition. I've learned that farm fields and school yards get fertilized more than most places so the coins come out in bad shape. At least you scored a really nice ring!

Good assortment of finds Tony. Those IH's look like zincolns though! The ring is very nice and looks older. Any idea on it's age? Bets wishes and HH, Dave.
 
I missed this thread, Tony... seems like lots of high targets! You going back there or did you hit all the huntable area? That ring is a looker!

Definitely not the best example of Illinois IHs Tony.
But a good example of how you can still squeak out some silver in one form or another! :thumbsup02:

Nice ring, Tony. I'll admit I missed this too.

The soil did that to the IH? Not a nearby piece of iron? The soil is much worse for coins up here in NE than it is for you guys out there, but the few coins that I got with rust spots were def next to iron. Maybe whatever it was, rusted away completely by now.
