Some Kind Of Chain Links?

I was out digging up some more iron relics out my back gate. There is nothing fancy about iron relics but it is good entertainment for me. Besides you never know...

This was about four inch down. It was an interlocked jumble when unearthed and it confused me for a minute. As you can see it is three seperate pieces. Each is about 1 1/2 inch long. Must be some good high grade steel cause there was not much surface rust.

Any ideas?

I have seen these before but I cannot remember what they are for! Anyway, they are way cool and can be repurposed into a lot of neat things.

I have seen them before also but can not put my finger on it. I know my Dad had some hanging around. Tire chains for snow perhaps.

I don't think they go to tire chains because there is no way to hook the chain to them. I also think they are too small for a tire chain. I think they may have been used with a rope or cord. But, I have no idea how!

Those look like the hooks that are on homes and utility poles to attach overhead phone wires.
A nail or lag screw is driven through the hole to mount it.
