Some relics from today's hunt

Lodge Scent

Got out early to beat the heat for a few hours of detecting at a stock pen area I've hit many times before. All the easy targets are long gone but you can always squeak out something if you work at it. Ferns were thick in some spots.

But there were enough good targets to keep me busy. managed some buttons, reed, an old pocket watch base, scythe handle thingy, and some whatsits (I'll post those in the "What Is It" section).

Included was a nice gilded 1830's W.H. Jones button and a pocket watch base inscribed "J. Moore, London". From what I could find he was making pocket watches in the late 1700's. From all the watch jewel holes, I am guessing it was a quality piece.

Does this scythe handle thingy look like a Capped or a Draped Bust Quarter to anyone??? It doesn't to me either but it sounded so good when I swung the coil over it, I was sure it was deep, big, old, silver. I had found a sweet Capped Bust dime at this site a couple of years ago and I was drooling over this signal. These things have faked me out big time in the past several times. I must have 7 or 8 of them and everyone of them sounded like a big silver.

Stay Safe!

it was a hot one huh Jeff and the skeeters were out pretty heavy too. bet that watch part had you pumped up too they sound pretty good , I do have to agree them brass collar sleeves sound so close to a large copper or silver it isn't funny. :hairpulling::hairpulling: at least you dug a few high value targets still in that pen and congrats on the old buttons .

Congrats on some nice finds. I'd have been happy for any of that this weekend,,, all I could find was rusty nails and 3 railroad spikes in the river side field we hunted today.

You're right, there's always something that's been missed. A nice bunch of stuff there. I love the pocket watch base!

I love the pocket watch base!
I have to agree Jeff, that writing would make it my favorite too...although that button is in remarkable shape.
I don't recall ever digging one of those collar sleeves...good, I don't need one more thing that sounds like a copper

Thanks folks! Yeah, I do like the watch base !

Here are some more scythe handle collar things Drew. Some day you will get faked out real good by one of those things.

That's funny. So you have had the pleasure of a major fake out caused by a scythe handle collar  . I had said to my self earlier "I can't see how Drew never dug one of these things." If you are detecting at cellar holes, you will be digging those things eventually.

Nice early finds Jeff. Good to see you have a site you can return to that will cough up a few more goodies with a little patience and persistence. Those horse collar buckles, have dug probably 5 or 6 of those things in the past 2 years and yes, they do sound quite sweet in the ground don't they? Similar to those small round iron rings I sometimes find. Pocket watch piece and button are all the better seeing they have writing on them.
