Sterling item ID and buckle age help

I've got two items I'd love some input on... The first is a small sterling item. My theory is that it is the end of an old cigarette holder, but I'd be curious if anyone has other ideas. The second is a large buckle. It almost looks like there is some kind of marking on the back but it's tough to tell what it might be. I'm hopeful that someone can narrow down an approximate age on this thing.

Cool finds. You've got a Batwing Buckle and what looks like it might have been a cane top.

Matt thats not a bad guess on the sterling item or maybe part of a late 1800's mechanical ink pen, the batwing buckles are a source of much debate . Some including me say they have a long history since the 1600's to about the war of 1812 and some say they are only 1800's era buckles.

Thanks guys! I would assume the buckle is from the 1800's based on the area it was found in. I tend to wonder if it was a regular belt buckle or part of some kind of horse harness.

Here's a pic of a cigarette holder with a silver end that I think looks pretty close to what I have.

very cool picture Matt , it sure looks close . the buckle would be considered a shoulder strap buckle or a "baldric" buckle
