SWORD HILT?

cleaning off my shelf over sink.i took a 2nd look at this piece and wondering if it is 1/2 of a sword hilt? made of heavy brass.appears to have some helmeted soldier in center.almost like a roman gladiator

hey Dave is it brass because it almost looks like pewter from the color?? to me the figure looks more Spanish conquistador than Roman centurion or gladiator. is the figure embossed on both sides of the piece??
