The Sun Shined On Me Today

Even though it was very cloudy and cool as my buddies say "The sun shined on me this time". I went to a well hunted home site with a friend and the Deus sniffed out some overlooked stuff among the trash. My first find was the 1899 S half dollar. I almost passed it up because it rang up as a 96 on my detector and that is in the iron range. But, the crisp signal made me decide to dig it and I am glad I did. If I hadn't I would have moved out of the area and not recovered the second target, an 1856 O half dime. They were my best finds of the day. I also found a sterling silver belt tip made by Keyston Bros. San Francisco and could use a little help on dating it. I am thinking 1900-1950 but would like to narrow it down. The other three coins are a 63 memorial, 41 wheat and 61 nickel.

Wow! 2 very nice looking pieces of silver. I bet the Barber half was a real shock when it popped out. We don't get many "S" mint marks in Illinois, are they also rare to find in Georgia? Is that your first half dime? They always ring up like indian head cents on the e-trac. Great post.
 
Awesome silver finds! Both of which are still on my bucket list. I've found it odd how sometimes coins will ring up so far from what one would expect, but does explain why they get left behind.

It is actually my sixth half dime, but the first O mint mark. And, yes the S mint is very hard to find down here.

I dug a memorial penny there that rang up in the low 70s! And the nickel came in in the low 50s. maybe the wet soil had something to do with it?

Yeah, I get memorials that ring up on my CTX anywhere from 12-32 up to 12-45. Had an SLQ at 12-38, walker half at around 12-40, and nickles 4 points off normal both directions. Now, if I go to my usual parks I know to dig anything repeatable under 6 inches and it is usually something good.
 
Great recoveries, especially from the trash. Yeah, I have to agree with the coins not ringing up like they should. My rule of thumb....if I'm in a productive area, dig it all
