What would you like to see in a new White's Detector?

So, what would you like to see in a new White's Detector? Now, I don't want to hear stuff like a solar powered coffee warmer on the arm cuff, or laser guided coil systems, but what features would be nice to see? Is it going to take a break from their current technology to compete with what Minelab is producing? Is VLF panned out, or is there still some new tricks to be exploited? Let's face it, there is more coins out there lost to masking rather than depth. What's it going to take to make Whites competitive again?
 
Well Jack a few of my ideas would be based on my V3i:

1. Able to customize programs on my computer & then be able to upload them.

2. Some sort of automatic adjustments to maximize all settings to get the most depth possible (Kind of like an automatic ground probe). Then there could be some manual override to make finer adjustments.

3. Some sort of better hand grips. My fingers get so sore from them being wrapped around the handle for so many hours at a time. My hunts usually are about 5-6 hrs.

This was actually part of the original plan on the Vision, and Early V3's. They had wireless USB dongles being tested, but could not get the software written so it was reliable. Huge mistake. I don't know why they did not go with the USB option. Afraid of leakage I guess. Great ideas Rebel.

Jack , who ever discovers and perfects the technology of unmasking targets will sell a lot of detectors.

but i would settle for a true "real" discriminating pulse induction detector and hey while we're day dreaming , throw in a pinpoint toggle and tone id .

Jack, you may remember how mad I got at my friend, Jimmy Sierra, over that dongle.

White's really screwed that entire thing up... dongle, USB, WHATEVER. The thing that really wound-my-watch was that after White's decided to drop the whole thing, they came out with a firmware update that added about a zillion languages, etc. What a waste of space! A good engineer (Jeff Foster, for example) could have written and tested the routines in about three days.

Further "updates" just dumbed-it-down even more. That's why my original Vision will never go back to White's for an "update". I'm afraid of any more updates that might turn it into an ice-cream machine. You have a high-end detector that is fairly complicated... just polish the edges instead of wasting time/money trying to make it for everyone.

So Invent one! lol. The pinpoint and unmasking might be something one in the same for what I will add. Not specific to white's detectors, but maybe a quad coil design where two smaller coils can be in the center. The "masking" where you can still find a coin is when the iron doesn't completely cover the target. We all know the falsing is when the smallest edge of the iron gives a false reading. Maybe when you get a falsing, you can switch to the smaller inner coils to pinpoint and verify if there is a true target there. Kinda like having the option of a smaller coil to sift through the trashy spots. Just the inner coils need to be balanced so it doesn't affect larger search coil depth or falsing. I say it as the machine uses one or the other at a time, but I am sure an algorithm can be used to utilize both to get better accuracy on target ID.
 
1. I would like it if they came out with a ripped off version of a SEF coil. Which are better at discriminating and more reliable.
2. A wireless coil design like the XP Deus would be nice. Swung a friends the other day and they are ridiculously light weight!
3. Having the option to have a few more things automatically adjust like the ground filter on the v3i. When I hunt rail stations there are big variations in mineralization and it is a pain to have to continually manually readjust.
4. Lithium Ion batteries. The Nickel metal hydrides on the V3I are inadequate.
5. It would be nice to be able to run in two frequencies sometimes on the V3I. I find the 22.5 to be more susceptible to EMI and it would be nice to be able to run in any combination of frequencies i wanted to.
6. Should be water proof!

I think with the V3i you can tweak a few settings to do a coil test. But how about when you boot up, it does a coil check as part of the start sequence?

ANYTHING to enhance target separation. My next detector purchase will be the machine that does that the best.

A built in DNA sequencer in the coil that will let me know after a few swings if Dave or Todd hit the site already so I don't waste my time.

Ya, and I can see people in the park with pacemakers dropping like flies. Very Funny freemindstuck, but Please stick on topic. Realistic features only. DNA sequencer does not qualify either. :lol: Always good to laugh, but when the next guy comes along, and digs an old coin you just passed over because your shiny new detector does not have what it takes to get the job done... Well, hat's not so funny. I think there are some great suggestions so far. I really like the option to run in two frequencies on the V3i, or better yet make the three frequencies 2.5 / 7.5 / 15 . That would fix the coil issues all the way around. Third party coils would magically start working again. Conditional response patterns would be great as well. It would take a faster CPU, but wouldn't it be cool to setup a condition in which the detector would elicit a response...

IF 2.5 frequency is dominent, AND target is deeper than 7 inches, AND response pattern is short THEN give response. You get the idea. Not nessisarely those parameters, but in general the ability to customize response on other factors, not just conductivity.

I see that carl@whites has been banned from their forum, I was reading something a few months that I think was technetics or tesoro had just hired a new engineer and I figure it's probably Carl :grin:

He's a good Man. I hope this company gives him the creative leeway to realize some of his ideas. He is a very good Engineer. I was fortunate enough to work with him briefly on Beta testing the TRX before he left Whites. We have not always seen eye-to-eye, but then again I am no engineer. I have a tremendous amount of respect for him.

Something they need to keep in mind is to try to keep it affordable for everyday metal detectorist. Maybe a cross between my MXT and my Sov GT!! ;):grin:
Also, interesting info about Carl! Wonder if Rudy knows??
 
I hope they are not just renaming the Vision/V3/V3i/VX3 again, and slapping on a new decal. :lol: That would be great if they had a new product though! I have owned the MXT, DFX, and the V3. I am ready for some new technology!
 
Jack , they will probably end up coming out with a coinmaster XII or a MX7 , personally if they don't "WOW" me soon with something I might venture out to the darkside or some other brand . I've about given up hope on the direction Whites is going and who is running that business.
 
A couple of years ago I remember an Engineer in the chatroom on Whites forum saying something about a hybrid VLF/pulse already proven but it was basically still a drawing board experiment at the time. I think that it might even have been Carl that said that but don't mark my word cause I'm not sure.

I might concur. Well, I never saw the chatroom but my detector uses VLF while my pinpointer is pulse. If the coil is within say 3 feet of the hole I am digging, it will set the detector off even tho they are different technologies. I dont' see why they couldn't be combined. Maybe the sensing area can be larger that way.
 
What I'd like to buy is a MXT with 3 available frequencies. Not that the MXT is a bad machine, it is the best all purpose machine in the market to me, easy to set up and great in the field. But I think a 3 kHz and a 22 kHz added to the 14 kHz setting will be nice and helpful. And depending on the v3(i), using the same coils, I think this will be no big deal. Upgraded software and a added switch.

That would do it for me.
