Almost didn't dig this Colonial stunner

Thanks Dan. It was maybe 6 inches. I gave it an air test at home before my post and it rang as a 10 out of the ground. Yeah, other complete buckles I have found sounded so sweet and rang high like a silver coin or an ox knob. Puzzling.

Almost didn't dig this Colonial stunner

Thanks Tony. If you look carefully you can see a little bit of rust in a few places closest to the inside pin. The pin is iron, but the rest of it is obviously is not. As for what the primary material is I'm just not sure.

Almost didn't dig this Colonial stunner

It rang up a 9 on my Nox 800, same VDI as a bunch of shell casings I had dug in that area. For that reason I started to walk away. Then I turned around and said what the heck just dig it. Then I saw it was going to be under a root and almost walked away again. So glad I stayed with it! I have...

Today's finds brought to you by the number 2

Thx, and yes very slender with just the one blade. Unique. Always tough to guess the age of pocket knives. Could be 50 years old or 200 you never know.

Today's finds brought to you by the number 2

Meager fresh water rocky beach finds include 2 pocket knives, flat button, "Carter's Lebanon NH" overall button, 1901 V and 1901 Indian, and a silver plated spoon with an "Abram French & Co" hallmark (mid 1800's).

    Living Big in the UK

Incredible Todd. Nice to see you posting here. Did you ever find that elusive trime? I have been lucky enough to find one in my career but I sure would rather a gold coin or two some day. Congrats!

Another day, very interesting-plus a big silver

Congrats! I love that coin, as you can tell from my avatar. ;)

Low level lake = big silver, seated

This is not my normal type of detecting. I much prefer fields or woods but with the drought and low level of this fresh water lake I decided to try this rocky sandy beach area. It paid off with a sterling silver spoon bowl, a Walker (my 4th) and an 1853/arrows seated quarter (my 3rd). I don't...

    1723 Woods Hibernia, spectacle buckle

Thanks Del. 1550-1650 range if I am to believe Ross Whitehead's buckle book.

    1723 Woods Hibernia, spectacle buckle

Got into some Colonial last weekend and finally found something worth posting! Unearthed a 1723 Woods Hibernia and a complete spectacle buckle from a farm field permission. I've included the "in situ" pics for those of you who like that kind of stuff.

    Mind blowing. Congrats!

    Complete Colonial shoe buckle

Multiple hunts and locations shown here. Dug my first complete Colonial shoe buckle since getting the Nox 800. Rang up as a 26. It swiveled flawlessly right out of the ground! Also found a nice knee buckle in a different location. The coins are New England copper mystery discs....thin and 1/2...

Belonged to Jefferson's great great grandson

Sometimes it pays to take a closer at your finds! I found this small silver plated item earlier in the summer but had never bothered to clean it until today. I almost tossed it! A light brushing revealed the name "J. G. Coolidge" and under it "No. Andover" which is the town in Mass where I found...

    1723 Woods Hibernia, relics

Hit a new field today and dug my first Woods Hibernia. It's a 1723 farthing and the flaking has started. I had never found one of those heart heal plates and today I dug two! What a beautiful New England spring morning. Hope everyone had a chance to get out!

Joining Tony in the Nox 800 Club

After almost 10 years with the SE Pro I got a great deal on a Nox 800 and picked it up yesterday. I'm sure it will be a big learning curve but I'm so excited. Still trying to get my head around the concept of wireless headphones (see what I did there?), no AA batteries, charging with a USB...

Minelab SE Pro settings for beach? HELP!

I'm a New England woods and fields Colonial relic hunter but find myself as a fish out of water literrally...in Florida for the next week. I've actually never detected on a beach. I have my Minelab SE Pro with me and will dust off my Andy Sabisch book, but any help appreciated on settings for...

    Any stamp experts out there?

Wondering if anyone has any thoughts on possible value of this stamp collection of 1940's era First Day Issue and First Day Covers. Dates range from 1944 to 1949 and stamps are mostly 1c to 6c stamps. Have not counted them all but there are probably somewhere between 150 and 200 of them. If...

My best 2017 finds...an 8 Reales tops the list

My 6th year of detecting was really a mixed bag. Despite detecting almost every weekend, my totals for silver coins and coppers were WAY off from previous years. Yet, on the bright side I managed to find two of my greatest "bucket list" coin finds ever...an 1821 Capped Bust Dime (my first...

Steel penny in coinstar. Good omen for Pats?

Found this 1943 steel penny in the coinstar earlier today. Wondered if this meant good luck or a bad omen for the Pats against the Steelers tonight. Well the win wasn't pretty, but just like this coinstar find...I'll take it!
