1699 William III Halfpenny, 1749 George II Farthing

Dug a couple of oldies today. This site had given up some old coppers in the past. I decided to use the small coil today and see what I could find in the iron patches. It was a hard hunting but it paid off. Took about two hours before I hit the George II farthing. Big iron right next to it of course.

Took another two hours iron tones ringing in my head and the sounds of square nails pretending to be something they are not, before I dug what I thought was a CT copper. Some careful cleaning at home revealed it was a William III halfpenny. The date appears to be in the wrong location though  It's to the right of Britannia instead of at the base. I would appreciate if someone that knows their coppers can help me with this one.

Great hunt! Good idea on the small coil amongst all the iron, it really paid off in a big way with some very nice oldies :congrats:

awesome hunt! so much good stuff hiding amongst the iron.we found that out 1st hand today.congrats on some nice colonial coppers

hey congrats on the coppers they came out in pretty decent shape , lots of detail :smitten: congrats on hitting the 1600's :cheering: :cheering:

I like the casual way you post these finds. If I found a coin from 1699 I would be in the clouds for a week! (I've never even hit the 1700s. Admittedly it is more difficult here in Illinois.)

I see what you're saying about the date on the William III Halfpenny, it is definitely to the right of Britannia instead of at the base. I know next to nothing about colonial coppers but a quick Google search shows that they are all like that. Nice that the date on yours is very clear.

Terrific finds! |)

Thanks folks!

Tony Two cent, I guess my post did come across as a bit clinical. I need to make better use of the emoticons. Believe me I was excited about both finds  and spend most of the last two days fondling that halfpence :shocked04:

Nice hunting picking those coins out of the iron field. Getting into the 1600's is fantastic. :congrats: on all your keepers.
