1700 William III and unexpected big silver

So yesterday a member of my detecting club invited a bunch of us out to a site with a bunch of cellar holes. In all there were around 10 of us and we had a blast. Highlights include a VT Copper, Mass Copper, CT Copper, 3 US LC's, a William III half penny dated 1700, half real, and a half dime!! What an awesome day!!! Enjoy the pics of my finds....

The silver pocket watch cover had me wondering if it was silver or not b/c it was really messed up, looks as though it was in a fire and melted. I had to do some extreme cleaning on it. Looks to have a fairly old makers mark as well.

You guys did great there :shocked04: You found your share of the treasure :clapping: Nice William copper and a decent '26 Large cent. Some great relics too. It kind of looks like you have a piece of depression glass there also. Usually the rainbow colored glass is pressed glassware from the depression era. Most times, cellar holes were used as garbage dumps much later on.

I was surprised as well. I put it in hot peroxide and when it was done, a section had flaked off and I saw the letters. It was almost as if it had two different layers of patina a hard one under a crusty one. With enough peroxide soaking it came off to reveal the detail on the obverse. The reverse however had a different patina all together. I think I could have gotten more details of the figure, however I would have obliterated the date which very clearly (to me) says 1700. So I left it as is.

Matt the only British silversmith mark i've seen with the initials DL was Dorothy Lane who was around from 1804 to 1814 out of the Newcastle area.

Dan, check out this link, scroll to the bottom to see the DL mark. Note that the DL in this one is in a rectangle. The Dorothy Langland has a circle in which the DL is in. I saw both, but thought the Irish one with the rectangle was more accurate.
