couple of relics

Yesterday , Trooper Bri and myself got out and hit a couple of cellar holes . Unfortunately they were pretty well hit already but i did mange to find a small cabin or out building in a large overgrown field that did produce a couple of finds . Also a couple of items from the beat up sites too.



A side from the three buttons (a small tombac , brass cuff and an older two piece ) my finds of the day were this older trigger guard that looks very similar to an American type design from around the 1760-80 era this was found at the small cabin/outbuilding site





Then a last minute save was this shoe buckle frame (Brian I almost felt guilty taking this one out of the ground) that was barely an inch deep. you can see the dirty layer flaking off to a nice bright green patina but being it had a multi grooved line design i choose to go another rout on its cleaning.



Instead i decided to clean it up and give it an antique brass look (maybe close to what it may have looked like new on the shoe it was worn) . if you look closely at the lower right you can still see a few spots of green patina left (where i haven't finished cleaning) . I like the "new" look on this one as it had a decent design already and I wouldn't of tried it on a plain frame type.

Nice finds Dan. Shoe buckle frame looks great. What technique did you use to clean it?

Kevin , if the shoe buckle is pretty stable looking (not brittle or flaking apart) and has some embossed or tooled design , I'll just usually lightly brush the high spots in one direction (just until the natural brass colored metal starts to reveal it self) to give the frame a nice contrast look between the highs and lows of the design. Drew did an excellent job on his first complete buckle after i explained it to him. On this buckle i went all out and brushed it until i got all the green patina off and then brushed across the grooves to highlight them more against the recessed areas.

Nice finds Dan. Maybe you are used to finding the mediocre things that you don't consider them good enough to post about? You had mentioned to be about only a few notable finds...
Good you got out. Were the bugs bothering ya? Maybe it had to do with area. The place I mentioned is kinda near water. When I got out Saturday too, out of the places one was near stagnant water (by that I mean a pond versus a river or stream) and that's when the bugs got bad. The pond wasn't visible from my location but I had to keep reapplying the spray and they would still come after me.

Was it because he went over the spot and missed it?

Don't feel guilty Dan, you had the coil over the right soil. That's a nice buckle frame, she looked good freshly dug! Congrats!

I wouldn't have missed a screamer like that Jim. I had been detecting in that area, just not that patch o' dirt. I did walk over it to see if Dan was finding anything, and was standing 3ft from it when Dan started swinging again.

Had myself a colonial beating Saturday. Only notable find was a change purse clasp and a pile of hunter's relics. Not complaining though. It's been a good year so far.

Jim , unless the buttons are of note I usually don't mention them as the iron "tack" buckles or scraps of mundane or melted brass and lead . the bullet i did find was a large caliber minnie ball . The skeeters weren't to bad but the little gnats were incredibly annoying :hairpulling::ticked:

Brian just remember that change purse could of been an incredible find had it had some money inside when it was lost. Well I keep telling myself that for each an every one of the 8 or 9 that i have found :bangahead02::bangahead02:. Highs and lows are the normal in this hobby my friend keep pressing on , this too shall pass.

I did mention to ya about those darn gnats. Altho, I also did say there were two out of the five areas where the skeeters were bad. Seems like we need a wearable bug zapper. I can picture it now like an antenna sticking up for your backpack looking like the radio man in the platoon.

Dan did say that you been getting the luck the few times before that whilst Dan, Dave, and Todd weren't getting much. Yin-Yang.. things balance out.

That trigger guard is a fascinating bit of history! The Shoe Buckle frame cleaned up so nicely! That is one item still on my bucket list!
