Dave, Dan, George... your opinions on final cleaning stage of Artillery button

The war of 1812 button is very stubborn so I decided on a warm peroxide bath and it finally loosed up the thin hard shell of dirt enough for me to chip most of it off. I am undecided on where to go next. There is some stubborn green vertigre in spots. What do you guys think???:thinkingabout:

it looks very nice Todd , you can either continue in the troubled areas or leave as is and preserve it with the ren-wax. my only concern is the delicate thin scripted lines in the letters , first instinct is to lightly brush the button with a brass brush but those lines could be brittle and break off completely so use extreme caution if you decide to do that. definitely leave the back like you have it now it adds character and shows the relics age nicely .

I would quit while your ahead and Ren wax it twice or more. Very Nice

If it were mine, I would try to buff the high points just a bit. even buffing it on a plain cloth can polish the high points slightly and make them stand out just a bit more. Whatever you do or don't do, never hold the button by the shank. They are strong on one piece buttons, but if it snaps off you will cry :crying02: :lol: When in doubt......leave it alone. You can always revisit it in later years.

Its an awesome piece I would leave it as is and just use the ren-wax to preserve it.

Dan would a quick dip in a mixed solution of water and CLR get rid of that verdigris in between the script? or use a q-tip dipped in the mix and dab

Dave the problem with the clr is it could "strip" or discolor the brass in the area you put it on . I would rather soak it and then apply the heat from a lamp and "toothpick" it .
