Good old Two-Cent Park gives up more Indians and Barbers

It was a beautiful weekend here in central Illinois and I was able to get in several hours of metal detecting on both days. I started out yesterday morning at a large grassy field next to an old grade school that I have hunted twice before with good results. I guess I've hunted it harder than I thought because yesterday I only found 1 Indian Head, a couple of wheat cents and a sterling silver ring.

So I decided to drive over to Two-Cent Park since it was nearby. I had more or less written it off as hunted out because my last several hunts there were not very productive. However, I thought maybe I could get a couple more keepers out of it now that the ground is not so dry. I decided to crank the manual sensitivity on my E-Trac all the way up to 29 and go really slow. In about 2 hours I got 3 Barber Dimes and an Indian Head Cent! All of these coins were about 10 deep in an area of the park I had pounded many times.

I headed home early because I had to get cleaned up and drive 1-1/2 hours to a concert in Effingham, IL that night.

Today I decided to head back to Two-Cent Park to see if I could coax any more keepers out of the ground. Again I hunted with my sensitivity at 29. Today I got 2 more Indian Heads.

After a while I drove over to the park where I found 10 silver coins a few weekends ago. At this park I found 1 more Indian Head and a Mercury Dime. I also found an eagle button that was about 8 inches deep.

Here are my total finds for the weekend:

Here are the keepers that came out of Two-Cent Park. This place continues to amaze me. This makes 40 total Indian Heads that I have found in this park, and 13 Barber Dimes.

To my recollection, this is the first time I have found two 1909 Wheat Cents in one hunt. (Although they aren't much to look at.) Oddly enough, both are 1909-VDB.

Sterling silver ring that I found at the grade school yesterday:

Eagle button that I found at the park today. The back of it must have been iron. Anybody know anything about it?

Thanks for looking and happy hunting! :beerbuddy:

Nice finds Tony!! I am shocked at how much you found back at 2-cent park. I think I'll revisit some of my hunted out sites and crank up the sensitivity too. I missed 2 days of work and have been sick in bed all weekend so no MDing for me. Best wishes and HH, Dave.

just goes to show you when they say hunted out congrats on a great weekend of hunting as you know i am sidelined until spring but its nice to see you making good finds dennis :perfect10: :perfect10:

Nice saves Tony... I would say that different soil conditions and gridding from different angles can always produce more fins at so called hunted out areas.

Nice digs Tony! Think you'll beat your silver total from last year? I'm guessing you will!

:wow: That is one sweetheart site. I'm amazed at the stuff your pulling out of there.

:congrats: on some really nice silver and again for the IH. Just amazing!

as a newbie that pile of treasure is like a dream that hasnt come true yet! after a year now i still am looking for my first silver coin, i found a war nickel...but i am not counting that as a silver. i have found several sterling pieces and rings even a gold ring...just no silver coins. having lots of fun looking...nice finds

:shocked03: wow Tony great totals |) |) they did use tin-back or iron backed buttons just around the Civil War era but without an actual backmark its hard to say exactly what age it is . it is safe to say its from around the Civil War to about 1901 though.

That's a GREAT stack of coins. Love those BARBERS and Indians. I have always felt that fall hunting is best. I can't explain it but I always seem to find silver in parks I thought I hunted pretty hard. It has been true this fall as well. Not sure how much time we have left (Brrrr) but way to make the last bit of time count. Great Hunt. Wisconsin Digger. PS How long are you able to hunt generally in your part of Illinois??

I have always had my best success in the fall as well. The last two winters here have been fairly mild with very little snow here in central Illinois, so I was able to detect pretty much every weekend all through the winter.

Congrats on the great hunt Tony, Here's to another mild winter here in the foothills of Mount Level :crossfingers:

Moist ground and stable, high sensitivity can really get the fringe targets to come in better. Great looking silver and Indians :smitten:
