Hello, I am very new to the hobby. Just recently retired, and wanted to try my hand at detecting.
I am from Rhode Island, and wanted to know if anyone else was also,
I've always enjoyed trying to find things on the beach, but being from inland, there are woods, fields,
and other places i'd love to explore.
I have a Garrett Ace 250 metal detector, and wanted to know if this is a good detector to use???
Hope to find someone who knows an area to detect in.

Sincerely

Welcome from California and congrats on your recent retirement.
Your Ace 250 is a decent detector but the technology of the currently produced detectors has advanced quite a bit since the 250 came out (so have the prices).

I would say a majority of the detectors being bought now are Minelabs,Deus and Nokta.
These companies and also Garrett and Fisher have many different models in many different price ranges.

I would use that 250 for awhile and see if detecting is something you want to stick with
before you upgrade and purchase another detector.

Check out detecting videos on you tube to get an idea of what you might want and what you need and what you are willing to spend.

Detecting is a great pastime, you may not get rich doing it but some of your experiences
can be very rewarding.
Best of luck to you and Happy hunting!

Hello Digger ,
welcome to the forum and congrats on your retirement . If this is your first detector its a smart start as you not investing a ton on a hobby you may or may not continue with . the 250 is a capable entry level machine but because its a single frequency detector it may struggle or act a bit erratic on the wet sands at the beach and that is normal. it may help to reground balance the machine in the wet sand and again when you go to the dry sand , metal detectors speak their own language and to be proficient with them you have to learn what it is trying to say .

It can be a very rewarding and almost therapeutic hobby , find a local club to meet like minded people and maybe a detecting partner .

Dan
