Robbie its hard to make out much from the photos , can you do any better close ups ??

Here`s another picture

Here`s what it looks like today after sitting in olive oil. Not much better. It looked like 1635 on the bottom of the coin last night, but I cant find it today. It was the size of a nickel but made of copper, which fell apart like a zinc.

What's the deal with olive oil? Does That Help Coins? Sorry I'm new to this.

olive oil can be used to clean some coins but the problem with it is its painstakingly slow . sometimes taking months or even years before any results are really noticed. I personally only use it to lightly coat a coin (this or vaseline) to keep it from re-oxidizing.

there many different ways to clean coins , the longer you have been finding them the more knowledge , tips you will get and more proficient at cleaning them.

I have had very little success using olive oil to clean coins. Like Dan, I sometimes use it to coat a coin (copper only) after I clean it.

Robbie, do you think your coin is silver? It kind of looks like it.

IDK... the coin looks worse to me after the soaking. From the first set of pics It kind of looks like I see a 16 near the bottom of the coin. I couldn't find anything in the generic 1635 coin search that had the date that small. The only coin that I saw having printing that small was also much larger of a coin. The 1635 tercentennial oak coin for CT, which was a half dollar size. There weren't many 1630's coins made of copper.

I`ll try to take a better picture tomorrow. I`m using a Hp digital camera and I`ve got it set in the macro with the flower setting. I don`t know how to get a closer shot?

Here`s more shots today

I know that it`s not silver because it`s flacking. I don`t know what else to do except like it soak to at least help preserve it.

its hard to tell just what the coin is composed of Robbie , in some pictures it looks silverish and in others it looks rusty and in yet another it looks like it could be a copper or brass. can you tell just what the color of the metal is ??

It`s brown. I know it looks silverish with the flash.

ok , now can you compare it with a modern coin for size reference ?? and about how thick is it??

size comparison

Here`s another shot in the middle of two nickels. One shot with the flash and one without.
