There are two options. My machine has 4 profiles pre-programmed. It automatically goes to Program 1 to discriminator for iron, but lowest setting. So either I can turn off the discriminator and know for sure it's iron as it will give steady readings in iron category, or turn up discriminator (and add sensitivity to compensate depth loss) as you said. I have the nails to test on, and sure enough the iron out of the ground is silent. Next to a coin it is still quiet. It picks up iron better. But that was the really big nail next to the smallest coin... a dime (besides the 3 cent piece which is ridic small). It's the few pops into the good range that throws me off...for those who question why I dug the iron.

Your welcome for the info. Sometimes it pays well to research. Btw, the new shovel is ordered, and another hand trowel too. Saw the Ames planter's pro tool at HD and it looks like it's really sturdy for a hand trowel. Hope by Friday they will be here. I had borrowed an army issued trench shovel which my dad got from the ANG, I could/should have brought it as a back up but it was in my garage still. Oh well. Here's the iron I dug, George. And the one button. Those nails are almost pristine. :lol:

Pretty cool that you were both able to get some old coins and relics. Dan, that shoe buckle is beautiful, as is your 1844 large cent. Great info on the crotal bell too, very nice that you were able to find some information about the maker.

George, that 1852 large cent looks to be in great shape! And I'm always jealous on any two-cent piece that's found. :thumbsup01:
