I hunted this old picnic grove with my dad, brother and nephew back on December 25, 2011. Here is the report from that hunt:

Since then I have been anxious to get back there for another hunt. This weekend I went back down to southern Illinois to visit my family and we were able to put in a full 6 hours of detecting at the old picnic grove today.

The soil at this site is not kind to copper coins, and today I discovered that it is also not very kind to nickels. Nevertheless, we had a very fun day of hunting and made some decent finds. My dad and brother stayed there with me for the full 6 hours, and my nephew stopped by for an hour or so too.

Here are today's finds:

We found 4 Indian Heads the first time, another 4 this time: 1898, 1901, 1903, 1905

This time I decided to dig more nickel signals, and it paid off with a few oldies: 1897, 1899, 1906

I've never seen a Buffalo Nickel this toasted before. Oddly enough, the date is still relatively clear. I think it's 1920:

Only one Barber Dime this time, 1914-D:

Two Mercs, 1940 and 1944:

We also found six Wheat Cents and a 1941 Jefferson Nickel. Thanks for looking and Happy Hunting!

That's a heck of a weekend... some of those pennies look a little rough, but others have that nice green patina. Around here most old copper seems to get warty and corroded. At any rate, congrats on a pocketful of sweet keepers!

Nice finds Tony. I see you got the nickel trifecta too. Looks like you were in the zone for V nickels and injuns. There's got to be some seateds there somewhere. Pretty soon your Dad and brother will be buying e-tracs! Best wishes and HH, Dave.

Tony, I can see why you were itching to get back there. That buff is pretty toasted but the Barber has full liberty so thats a good thing. Congrats on all the keepers

Re: Success at the old picnic grove again.

That pile of old dirty coins is the purest and most beautiful thing I have seen today. I am thinking of moving (vacationing) to Iowa!
