What the heck is this?!?

The bottom says Patent Sept 06 1867 or 9 (?) the last # is hard to discern... I was thinking an old watch due to the gear thing a ma jig inside and looks like it stuck out the side at one point. Obviously crushed- I had to pry it open. Was surprised to see the gear inside, then realized the top is a wind up thingy? lol It's so simple, yet don't know what it is! It says something on the top, I imagined Timex, but prob not. It doesn't have any other parts resembling clock. Help!

Looks like part of a lantern where the ribbon wick would come through. The gears are to grab the wick and advance if from the bottom (where the fluid is) to the top where the flame would be. The dates would be the pattent dates. At least that's what it looks like to me. It's just a partail piece of the whole unit.

lol that was a fun thread! Yessss.... of course George! A lantern wick roller thingy 8/ Btw I pulled it apart and dissected more and found a more detailed patent date on the other side... Sept 16 1862 I love when things have dates & I can now say I have officially started a lantern part collection, as this is my third piece! :cheesysmile:

Oh, I know... I only tried 1867 and 1869, before I dissected it and found the more prominent patent date inside! I enjoy finding lantern parts, it sparks thought about how it was in the old day before modern lighting... This is actually the 3rd piece I've found.

Btw, really glad you found us here, you add a great dimension. And like I said before, love your enthusiasm!

Thanks for the nice words... Of course, I love finding Silver and Gold, but I get more of a kick by digging up some history. Buckles, buttons, LANTERN PARTS :grin: , just thinking about how it was in those days BTW, I have a few old lantern pieces. Still pretty dirty. I never even thought about looking for a patent date on them. I just threw them in my Saved junk pile. Maybe I'll go clean them up and check for a date thumbsup01
